Hope For Horses
Angel (August 2026)
Angel came to us 18 months ago after being found trapped in a cattle gate, pregnant, terrified and badly injured. She had been chased by local youths who routinely torment and abuse rural ponies. With the landowner prepared to shoot her to remove her from the property, local heroes stepped in and freed her. Her legs were severely lacerated, but thankfully there was no permanent tendon or ligament damage. After treatment at Wellington Hospital, she came to us to recover and safely give birth.
Just over a year ago, Rascal was born, a healthy little colt despite everything Angel had endured while carrying him. Angel herself has made remarkable progress. She once attacked when touched and flinched at the sight of treats, having learned that food was sometimes used to lure horses close enough to be hit. Today she accepts treats, grooming, hoof trimming and blankets, and is far calmer around people.
Angel and Rascal were fortunate. Without her rescue, safe shelter and proper nutrition, Rascal may never have survived. Countless other horses around Cape Town are not so lucky. Many live without enough food, clean water, hoof care or deworming, while dehydration, colic and bush racing continue to claim lives. They are beautiful animals who have simply been forgotten.
